“Triangle,” Kemblesville, Pa. No. 501, Pub. By Ed. Herbener, Newark, Del. This is a view of Kemblesville from the south on New London Road (Route 896), looking toward the Kemblesville Hotel. All the major buildings visible, if barely, in this postcard survive. This postcard was mailed in 1917.
Franklin School House, 1126. The schoolhouse, which was used into the 1950s, is located on New London Road (Route 896) north of Kemblesville and survives as a private residence. The postcard was mailed in 1910.
Kemblesville, Pa., From the West. Despite the title, this postcard shows a view of the village from the north, on what is now New London Road (Route 896). Most of the structures visible in this postcard survive, though the view is now somewhat obstructed by newer buildings. We don’t have a scan of the back of this postcard, so a mailing date is not available, but a the reverse of a copy seen online said it was printed by the Eureka Post Card Co., Wilmington, DE; that copy was postmarked 1910.
M. E. Church, Kemblesville, Pa. No. 503, Pub. By Ed. Herbener, Newark, Del. The Kemblesville United Methodist Church was destroyed by arson in 1991. This postcard was mailed in 1912.
Penna. Ave., Kemblesville, Pa. No. 504, Pub. By Ed. Herbener, Newark, Del. The Methodist church is in the distance on the right. In Herbener’s postcards, New London Road (Route 896) north of the village is called Pennsylvania Ave., south of the village it is called Delaware Ave., and Appleton Road is called Maryland Ave. This postcard was mailed in 1917.
The Square, Kemblesville, Pa. The historic J. G. West House is in the center of the picture, and the main structures, though well-hidden by trees, survive. Printed by the Eureka Post Card Co., Wilmington, DE, the card was never mailed.
Del Ave Kemblesville Pa. A different view of the same scene in The Square postcard. Printed by Ed. Herbener, Newark, Del., the card was mailed in 1907.
Res Fred West M D Kemblesville. A closeup of the J. G. West House, which had become the residence and office of Frederick West, who had succeeded his father as the local doctor. We don’t have a scan of the back of the postcard.
Maryland Ave., Kemblesville, Pa. Looking toward the center of the village from partway down Appleton Road. The blacksmith’s shop on the left does not survive, but the homes on the right do. A scan of a photocopy of the postcard, which accounts for the strong black-and-white effect. Needless to say, no scan of the back.
Maryland Ave., Kemblesville, Pa. No. 502, Pub. By Ed. Herbener, Newark, Del. Also looking toward the village but from probably somewhat further down Appleton Road, though not as far as Walker Road. The postcard may have been mailed in 1913; the postmark is hard to read.
Summit View, Dr. West. This is the “cottage” that Dr. J. G. West built for his retirement; it survives on Appleton Road, across Municipal Lane from the Post Office. That may be Dr. West with his dog. Printed by E. Herberner, the postcard was mailed in 1909 by Dr. West himself.
Kemblesville School. Located south of Kemblesville on Appleton Road, the schoolhouse no longer survives. The postcard was never mailed.
Flint Hill M. E. Church, Strickersville, Pa. The church, which no longer survives, was located on Flint Hill Road near Elbow Lane, within Franklin Township close to the boundary line with London Britain. We don’t have a scan of the back of the postcard.
[Untitled:] Kemblesville Farmhouse? This postcard lacks descriptive info, but was mailed from Kemblesville in 1909 and was described as a Kemblesville farmhouse. It's possible it's located outside Franklin Township.
